Dave is national expert on college substance misuse prevention and law enforcement. He is the author of the Amazon Best Seller, “Motivational Interviewing for Campus Police.” Dave was named to the “Top 40 Under 40 Military Class of 2016” by Military Transition News. He is currently the owner of DJC Solutions LLC, a national training and consulting company and a founding member of Prevention Leaders, Inc. Training, speaking, and helping others is what he does best!
Dave is also an Associate for SAMHSA’s Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (CAPT), There he provides targeted training and technical assistance (T/TA) on substance misuse prevention to States, Tribes, and Universities across the country. His primary focus is partnering with colleges and universities to guide them through needs assessment, capacity assessment, strategic planning and implementation of evidence-based prevention programming.
Dave is a veteran coach for the CAPT’s Coaching for Success Initiative through which he has worked with multiple high-need universities. As their coach, he developed a customized T/TA plan using a comprehensive approach to build their knowledge, skills, and capacity to implement evidence-based prevention strategies.
Before joining the CAPT, Dave was the Assistant Director of the Illinois Higher Education Center for Alcohol, Other Drug, and Violence Prevention. He was responsible for assisting Illinois colleges and universities in reducing the negative alcohol, other drug, and violence consequences impeding student academic success, personal growth and development. His work focused on policy development, education, student assistance, enforcement, assessment, campus/community collaboration and socio-ecological interventions.
Dave brings a unique experience to substance misuse prevention, having served as a Campus Police Officer at Eastern Illinois University (EIU). While serving as their Crime Prevention Officer, EIU was identified in the top 10 nationwide for evidenced-based crime prevention programming by Margolis Healy LLC, on behalf of the US Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance. Through his crime prevention programming, Dave worked with over 7,500 students, faculty and professional staff on topics ranging from Motivational Interviewing, Bystander Intervention, Alcohol/Drug Prevention, Sexual Assault Prevention, and Conflict Resolution.
Dave is proud to have served in the Illinois Army National Guard for 6 years and was deployed under Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was award two Army Commendation Medals, one for valor and one for meritorious service, Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Air Assault Badge, National Defense Service Ribbon, Iraq Campaign Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
